People living with an opioid addiction know what it means to be dope sick — to suffer through the aches, pains, nausea and cravings that overtake the body when it can’t get its fix. The agony can last anywhere from one to three days, and it’s terrifying enough to send a person right back to using again. For decades, though, the only way to kick heroin and other opioids was to power through the excruciating symptoms of withdrawal until the body had gone through a complete detoxification.

Most people understand heroin is a highly addictive, very dangerous substance. But because they are available by prescription, people often forget that opioid-based pain medications share many of the same chemical characteristics as heroin. And just like their illegal chemical cousin, opioid-based pain medications are highly addictive — even when they are prescribed by a doctor.

In May 2018, the State of Ohio passed a new set of rules designed to curb the proliferation of
opioids in communities throughout the state. The rules will require physicians to monitor their
patients’ opioid use and continuously evaluate them for signs of opioid abuse when their
prescription dosages are increased.
