IHBT FAQ’s
Q: Who is eligible for IHBT Services?
A: IHBT is an intensive family treatment model for children and adolescents (ages 6-17, 18-21 if the child is still living in the primary caregiver’s home) that are at risk of out of home placement (ie. residential, incarceration, foster care, group home). The child must have a qualifying mental diagnosis and be enrolled with OH Rise.
Q: What is IHBT?
A: IHBT stands for Intensive Home-Based Treatment. IHBT is provided almost exclusively in the home and community. Families can expect to work with their case manager/therapist team about 2-3x/week for a total of 4-6 hours/week on a variety of issues including crisis stabilization, creating healthy family dynamics, identifying resources that support the family, and working on skills to reduce risk of out of home placement. It is a time-limited service and lasts from 3-6 months. There is 24/7 support with IHBT providers to address crisis needs.
Q: Where does IHBT take place?
A: Your IHBT provider wants to meet where its most helpful to you! IHBT is a model that is designed to meet out of the office for instance at your home, at the school, or in the community—where it is convenient for you!
Q: When would I meet with my IHBT team?
A: We know that planning several appointments a week can be really challenging for a family’s schedule. Our staff is dedicated to meeting with families at times that are convenient for them.
Q: How will IHBT help my child?
A: The goal of IHBT is to help families build skills and capacity to safely manage their child’s behaviors and moods in the home. IHBT will look different depending on the needs of the family. We will work with your child individually, but you can also expect us to including parents and other supports in the sessions and planning. This may include meeting with parents, family members, friends that feel like family, teachers and school staff, probation officers, doctors, or anyone else that you feel would be important for the well-being of your child.
Q: What can I expect in an IHBT appointment?
A: We will strive to make a plan with you so there are no surprises when it comes to the services we provide. Some sessions may include topics such as safety planning, how to de-escalate situation that may be unsafe, finding resources in the community that help the family as a whole, helping your child have meaningful activities and relationships, or how to help your child manage their mental health diagnosis.
Q: How would IHBT be different from office-based therapy?
A: One of the most obvious differences is that we come to you! We want to intervene in the spaces where your child is struggling. Oftentimes, in office-based therapy, we are talking about or intervening in problems that have already happened. When we work on behaviors in the home or community, we can intervene right then and there. For instance, if your child is refusing to do their chores, your IHBT therapist can develop a plan with you and support you with implementing that plan in the home.
Q: What can IHBT do?
A: IHBT has been proven to:
- Decrease out of home placement. Keep youth and their families together.
- Decrease juvenile justice involvement.
- Increase school success including increase in grades, reduction in school discipline
